(Sp. model spelled same [t∫aparal] < chaparro 'short, stubby' probably of pre-Roman origin, and apparently related to the dialectal Basque term txapar(ra), a diminutive of saphar(ra) 'thicket' or 'hedge' plus the Spanish collective suffix -al)Texas: 1842. As Watts observes, it appears that this term originally applied exclusively to the scrub oak. It now refers to a number of thicket-forming, often thorny shrubs or small trees, and to a large dense thicket formed by these plants. It may also refer to a plain covered with such unruly brush (see also brasada). Clark indicates that this term applies especially to shrubs and trees of the genera Acacia, Ceanothus, Condalia, Forestiera, and Quercus. Hendrickson notes that this term has become recognized throughout the United States because of its use in western films. The DRAE references chaparral as a place covered in chaparros, which may be either a variety of shrublike oak trees with many branches, or a Central American malpighiaceous bush with clustered flowers, round fruit, and opposite leaves that are thick and petiolate. This second plant grows on dry plains and has thick, knotty, resistant branches used to make walking sticks. Santamaría defines chaparral as either the common name of a wild rhamnaceous plant native to central and northern Mexico ( Condalia obovata), or a place abounding in chaparros. Santamaría gives several definitions for chaparro. It is generally a bush found in tropical regions in the Americas whose rough-textured leaves are sometimes used as sandpaper and whose bark is rich in tannin. On the southern coast of Mexico, it refers to several varieties of oak trees of the genus Quercus. In Tabasco, Mexico, it is an isolated mass of vegetation formed by vines and short trees, and in all of Mexico it is the common name given to the Aythia collaris, a plant native to the northern part of the continent. (Spanish cañada [see above])Carlisle: 1841^2. Glossed by Carlisle as an adjective, meaning of or pertaining to the Canadian River. Its primary meaning 'of or pertaining to Canada,' however, does not derive from Spanish. According to Falconer's Texas Santa Fe Expedition, the Canadian River was not named for the nation of Canada but received its name from its steep riverbanks, which are similar to the sides of a cañada, or ravine. -

It is sometimes used to differentiate between an American and a Mexican saddle. The Mexican saddle uses less leather than the American and can be damaging to a horse's back. Glossed in the DRAE as the framework of a riding saddle. The DRAE also notes that this term may refer poetically to a saddle. Santamaria references it as a saddletree that consists of two inclined planes that leave an opening in the center. At the front is the cabeza del fuste, or head of the saddle, and at the other end is the teja, or cantle. Islas concurs and provides the names of the various parts of the fuste and the several varieties of saddletree that are used in Mexico.Alternate form: fusty. -

A wide plateau in Texas and New Mexico, the site of a trail from San Antonio, Texas, to Santa Fe, New Mexico, used by early Spanish explorers. Cobos indicates that 'Stockaded Plain' or 'Palisaded Plain' would be a more appropriate translation of the Spanish llano estacado than 'Staked Plain,' which is how the name of the region is generally translated into English. He notes that Spanish explorers named the plain after a rimrock formation that resembled a stone fortress. The assumption by English speakers that the plain was named for a trail marked by stakes driven into the earth is a misconception or simply the product of a poor translation. -
